Diarrhea After Eating
Diarrhea After Eating
We’ve all experienced diarrhea after eating before (if you’re one of the few that
haven’t count your lucky stars) and know what an unpleasant experience it can
be. How many times do you go out to a restaurant, or stop off at a fast food joint
on the way home from work, and can’t wait to dig into your long awaited treat.
You scarf down your food, loving every morsel of it, when suddenly that feeling
starts in your stomach. It begins to rebel and send signals to your brain that your
digestive system is just not working properly. You hope and pray that the feeling
will just go away, or that it will merely be gas. Then the cramps intensify and
you finally admit to yourself that you have diarrhea after eating that meal that you
couldn’t wait to enjoy.
Diarrhea After Eating Is Such An Embarrassment
I personally had this embarrassing and highly uncomfortable scenario occur way
too often when I was a young man. I thought it was actually a normal course to
get diarrhea after eating. I never thought to ask someone, because like any man
who has too much testosterone, I was too proud and afraid. I would have given
anything to have it cured, anything except to acknowledge how embarrassing it
was of course. If you have every had diarrhea after eating symptoms then you know the
feeling I am talking about. You know how terrible it can be. The one thing you
might not be able to fully understand is the constant thought in your mind that
everyone knows why you go to the washroom all the time and they are talking
about it behind your back. It can be a very destructive and counterproductive
paranoia indeed.
When I finally told my doctor about my problem he wasn’t surprised in the least.
He said it was very common (I would have never guessed). Apparently the two
main causes are an allergy to gluten or the most common of all: irritable bowel
syndrome (IBS). I also found out that the two are often interrelated.
IBS Is Often Responsible For Diarrhea After Eating
Gluten is often the main irritant for IBS, and diarrhea after eating is one of the
most common ways that it manifests itself. If you are not allergic to gluten I
guarantee you have never realized how many main staples in our diet include the
ingredient. Anything made with wheat, grains, or similar products is out of the
question. Think about pastas, piazza, cereals, breads, sometimes milk, and many
other everyday foods.
Diarrhea After Eating | Conclusion
The only good news if you have IBS or are allergic to gluten and consequently
you have been experiencing diarrhea after eating, is that it is usually treatable with
a fairly insignificant change to your diet. Before I knew what my problem was I loved eating pastas and thick sandwiches when I went out. Subway was a definite
once-a-week stop for me. This all had to change (it was also the reason why I
got diarrhea after eating out so much). I had to increase my fruits and vegetables
substantially. I found that actually a sizeable percentage of the population had
similar problems to mine and that there were products for diarrhea treatment marketed towards that demographic. I also had to cut out beer, which was one of the most difficult social
habits to break. I have never been a hard alcohol person, and I just thought the
upset stomach I experienced every morning after drinking was par for the course
(even if I only had a beer or two). I just thought I had a more substantial hangover
than most people. Naturally since beer is made from grains (hops, barley and
oats), it was pure poison to my system (along with alcohol, which is actually just
pure poison to everyone’s system). Since eliminating these parts of my diet I have
been experiencing less diarrhea after eating, and have also led a much healthier
life.
